How many persons asked for subscription lists for running independently in elections

Eleven persons and an initiative group have so far filed applications to the Central Election Commission to be issued with subscription or support signature lists for running for MP independently. Meanwhile, one of the applicants changed his mind and returned the lists without signatures, head of the CEC’s Communication, Public Relations and the Media Division Rodica Sîrbu stated for IPN.

The nomination of candidates for MP and issuing of subscription lists to independent candidates take place between May 12 and June 11. The lists with signatures and all the required documents must be submitted not later than 30 days before the election day.

Within five days of the receipt, the subscription lists with signatures in support of independent candidates are examined and the candidates are informed about the results. A decision as to the registration is taken within seven days of the receipt of the documents required for registering the independent candidates.

To be registered as independent candidates, the male applicants need to collect 1,500 to 2,500 signatures, while the female applications - 1,000 to 2,500 signatures.

Rodica Sîrbu said that no one has yet presented the lists with signatures to the CEC. Even if they don’t manage to collect the necessary number of signatures, the applicants must return the subscription lists to the Commission.

Under the Electoral Code, the election threshold for an independent candidate is 2% of the valid votes cast all over the country.
