How do we use fireworks safely? Recommendations and preventive measures

Improper use of fireworks during the winter holidays can cause tragedies. Both the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU) and the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI) warn citizens about the dangers associated with the use of pyrotechnic materials and emphasize the importance of following safety rules, IPN reports.

Specialists warn that launching fireworks involves major risks such as fires, burns or trauma, as well as various other serious incidents. "To prevent risky situations, we urge citizens to avoid the use of pyrotechnics and to strictly observe fire-fighting rules. That way we would all be safe and fully enjoy the holidays", warn IGSU representatives.

The National Agency for Food Safety (ANSA) urges citizens to avoid the use of pyrotechnics during the winter holidays, emphasizing the negative impact on human and animal health. Fireworks cause extreme stress to pets and birds and the loud sounds and bright lights can disorient them or even cause hearing loss. In order to protect wildlife and the environment, ANSA recommends not using fireworks and taking safety measures. If people do opt for fireworks, however, they are advised to buy them from authorized dealers, avoiding products sold illegally in markets or on the street.

"Pyrotechnic items must be properly labeled in the state language and include clear instructions for use. It is forbidden to sell these products to minors. We urge citizens, especially parents and teachers, to jointly take appropriate measures not to admit the use of pyrotechnic products by minors in order to avoid incidents", explains the communication department of the Ministry of Interior.

Another important aspect is the place and method of launching. "Launching fireworks from balconies, in hallways, crowded courtyards, next to buildings or vehicles, in forested areas or in areas with restricted access is strictly prohibited. Fireworks should only be set off in open spaces, at a safe distance from people and flammable objects," the rescuers say. Persons handling pyrotechnics must be lucid, avoiding the use of materials under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Smoking and open fire near pyrotechnics are also prohibited. If a product malfunctions, it should not be touched or re-lighted until at least 15 minutes have passed.

Firefighters stress that safety measures are not limited to fireworks. When decorating your home and Christmas tree, the tree should not be placed near heat sources or combustible materials such as curtains or furniture. "It is forbidden to light candles near the tree, and electrical installations should be disconnected at night or when the dwelling is unoccupied," emphasize the firefighters.

"To enjoy the holidays without incident, treat the use of pyrotechnics responsibly. Responsible behavior can save lives. By respecting safety rules, we all enjoy the magic of the holidays", is the joint message of the IGSU and MAI.
