HMPV virus is spreading like wildfire. ANSP warns

In some regions of Asia, there is a sharp increase in the number of infections with the respiratory Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV). In this context, the National Agency for Public Health comes with a series of recommendations to reduce the risk of illness. In Moldova, the first eight cases of HMPV were confirmed during the 2023-2024 season, IPN reports.

In the 2023/2024 season, out of the total samples investigated, eight were confirmed with the presence of HMPV. From the beginning of this season (September 30) to date, no cases of HMPV infection have been confirmed in the samples analyzed by ANSP laboratories. Even so, experts say prevention is the best measure.

"The human metapneumovirus is a respiratory virus that belongs to the Pneumoviridae family, together with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Discovered in 2001, HMPV can cause upper and lower respiratory tract infections in people of all ages, but young children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are most affected", an ANSP press release said.

The virus causes symptoms similar to flu and other acute respiratory infections, such as fever, cough, nasal congestion, shortness of breath (in severe cases). Although in most cases the infection is mild, it can progress to complications such as pneumonia, especially in vulnerable groups.

The ANSP warns that HMPV is transmitted through direct contact with respiratory secretions (coughing, sneezing, contact with contaminated surfaces and through close interactions with infected people.

To prevent respiratory infections, including HMPV, experts recommend hand hygiene, coughing and sneezing etiquette. Cover mouth and nose with a tissue or elbow. Contact with sick people should be avoided, and distance should be kept from people with respiratory symptoms.
