Historians propose initiating amendment of Constitution at “European Moldova” Assembly

The “Alexandru Moșanu” Association of Historians of the Republic suggests initiating the amendment of the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova at the “European Moldova” Assembly that was programmed for May 21. The proposal was made public by the Association’s deputy chairman Ion Negrei in a news conference hosted by IPN.

“We cannot enter the European Union with a Constitution designed by the agrarian-communist forces in 1994, after we only left the Soviet Union and the Constitution was primarily written under the influence of factors from the Kremlin,” stated Ion Negrei.

He noted that even if the phrase “Romanian language” was introduced in the Constitution, there are yet other shortcomings. Moldova’s identity status is indefinite and the Constitution stipulates that the country is a multinational state, which is not true. A series of things should be changed in the Constitution. The political forces should set the amendment of the Constitution as a priority.

Ion Negrei said the affiliation not only to the European space, but also to the Romanian space should be raised. Moldova should open its way to the EU by a number of actions, such as the withdrawal from the CIS and the underlining of the necessity of evading the Russian propaganda space. Also, when the accession negotiations between Moldova and the EU are opened, the procedure for filing an application for NATO membership should be launched.

Anatol Petrencu, chairman of the “Alexandru Moșanu” Association of Historians of the Republic of Moldova, said it is strange that the term “national” disappeared from “National Assembly”, as the event planned for May 22 was called initially. The withdrawal from the CIS is a step that should be taken. Moldova should join the sanctions imposed by the EU against Russia and should equal the number of Russian diplomats in Moldova and the number of Moldovan diplomats in Russia. The government should work out a concrete plan of decommunization, decolonization and derussification of the Republic of Moldova.

A document with all the recommendations formulated by the Association will be submitted to the working group that deals with the organization of the “European Moldova” Assembly” of May 21.
