Hazardous waste to be managed by specialized center

The hazardous waste could be dealt with by a specialized center. The Ministry of Environment proposed a draft decision concerning the creation of the Center for Hazardous Waste Management for public debates, IPN reports.

The Center, which will be managed by the Ministry, will have to develop a network for collecting hazardous waste from economic operates and domestic users for disposing of this safely, without affecting the environment.

Among the key duties of the Center will be to provide for money, based on contracts, consultancy services as to the process of collecting, packing, storing and transporting waste, to work out technological solutions for recycling/disposing of historically accumulated waste, to collect and temporarily store flows of hazardous waste.

The Center will also recycle florescent lamps and other waste that contains mercury, will decontaminate packing of hazardous chemical waste and will provide services to organize internships in the area of hazardous waste management for students of the faculties of chemistry biology and engineering.

The Center will be built with investment funds provided as grants and with co-financing from the budget.

Hazardous waste is waste that poses substantial or potential threats to public health or the environment. This includes such heavy metals as lead and mercury, corrosives substances, chemical waste, explosives, contaminated soil, oil residues, asbestos waste, inflammable or radioactive waste and pesticides.
