Minister of Justice Veronica Mihailov-Moraru said the General Assembly of Judges set for March 17 could have alleviated the difficult situation in justice by electing and forming a self-managing body. As the meeting was interrupted until the end of April, harsh solutions need to be adopted now and interference definitely cannot be invoked this time, IPN reports.

“Regrettably, by postponing the election of members of the Superior Council of Magistracy, the goal was actually to perpetuate the serious situation in justice. Judging by most of the opinions stated by judges, I see that the public interest mattered less and the constitution of a SCM that would start to deal with the problems in the justice sector – appointment of judges, fast resolution of cases, taking of important decisions in the management of the judicial system - is not wanted. The opportunity of being part of the reform and, especially, of restoring the image of the judiciary, could have been taken this way,” stated Veronica Mihailov-Moraru.

The official noted that as minister of justice, she wants a partnership to be established for implementing the agenda for joining the European Union, for strengthening the justice and anticorruption systems.

The General Assembly of Judges that convened on Friday after a pause of four years was interrupted until April 28 and a joint statement on the situation in the system is to be formulated until then. The judges also decided to put off the election of four members of the Superior Council of Magistracy. Criticism was leveled at the judges after the event, while President Maia Sandu convoked the Supreme Security Council for Monday, describing the situation in the justice sector as exceptional.
