Hacker to be tried for infecting information systems

A Moldovan hacker was arrested on suspicion that he infected information systems by distributing unlicensed software through platforms of the “torrent” type. The police recommend maximum prudence when downloading products from such platforms, IPN reports.

It was established that the Moldovan, together with other persons who haven’t been yet identified, uploaded different unlicensed software that was first infected with viruses on platforms with a PEER-TO-PEER (P2P) mechanism of the “torrent” type with the aim of obtaining information to enter emails or other online accounts.

After infecting information systems, the hackers obtained passwords to emails, bank accounts and website accounts of over 3,600 users of information systems from Moldova and abroad.

During searches at the suspect’s home, the police seized two laptops, three mobile phones, a hard disk drive and other important evidence. The hacker is under investigation. The penalty he faces is not yet known.

By a press release, the police urge the citizens to use licensed software, to install updated security solutions, to use browsers with pro-active protection and to be maximally prudent when opening suspect email attachments so as to avoid such cases.
