Gunfire during arrest of corrupt police officer

A major of the Center for Combating Trafficking in Persons was arrested last night on suspicion of passive corruption, IPN reports.

According to the National Anticorruption Center, the police officer asked for €2,500 for not examining a number of complaints submitted by the Embassy of Italy to the Center for Combating Trafficking in Persons. The Embassy asked investigating the irregularities committed by a number of persons when making a set of documents needed for being issued with visas for Italy.

A criminal case was started against the major over passive corruption. During several weeks, the policeman received €2,500 in several tranches under the control of the National Anticorruption Center. He was arrested immediately after he received the last tranche of €1,000.

During the arrest, the man put up resistance and the anticorruption officers fired three shots at the wheels of the police officer’s car and had to use physical force.

The man faces up to 10 years behind bars. The investigation is conducted by the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office.
