GUAM Foreign Ministers to Discuss Further Interaction: Secretary General

GUAM Foreign Ministers intend to consider further interaction within the organization. Within the UN General Assembly session in New York, this week, the Foreign Ministers of Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova will discuss the situation, which occurred after the Russia-Georgia conflict, and still unsettled ‘frozen conflicts’ in GUAM area, GUAM Secretary General Valeriy Chechelashvili said in a telephone conversation from Kiev on 17 September, Trend news agency reports, quoted by Info-Prim Neo . “We are coordinating the date of the meeting,” he said. According to Chechelashvili, political interaction and organizing activities will be discussed at the meeting. Sectoral cooperation will be considered. Four post-Soviet republics; Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova, established the GUAM format in 1997 during a summit of presidents of European Union countries in Strasbourg. In 1999, Uzbekistan joined the organization but left four years later. In 2006, at the first summit of the organization in Kiev a decision was made to announce GUAM as an international organization with a new name; Organization for Democracy and Economic Development – GUAM.
