Grant of €250,000 from EBRD for increasing energy efficiency of Moldova’s Railways

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) provides a grant of €250,000 for developing an energy efficiency project at Moldova’s Railways. In its March 3 sitting, Parliament ratified the grant agreement between Moldova and the EBRD within the project to restructure Moldova’s Railways. The money is offered from the Bank’s Shareholder Special Fund, IPN reports.

Deputy Minister of Transport and Road Infrastructure Sergiu Bucataru said the goal of the project is to create an efficient railway system that would meet the people’s needs and would facilitate internal and external trade. The money will be used to implement a project to manage fuel consumption. Software will be purchased to control the volume of diesel fuel in the reservoirs of engines and fuel consumption. The project is aimed at increasing energy efficiency at Moldova’s Railways.

The implementation of the given project is a precondition of the agreement signed with the EBRD by which a loan of €52.2 million is offered to Moldova’s Railways for modernizing infrastructure. The EBRD’s loan will go to purchase ten new multifunctional locomotives and to rehabilitate the railroad infrastructure and to also support the broader reform of the railway sector so as to provide services of a high quality and to compete with other means of transport.
