As a result of the June 3 and 17 elections, a balanced political spectrum was set up in Gagauzia, so that there is no political party to hold the leadership, Governor of Gagauzia Mihail Formuzal told a news conference on Wednesday, June 20. According to the governor, the voters in Gagauzia opted for 12 independent candidates for mayor, 5 communist, 4 representing the Bloc “Patria-Rodina Ravnoparvie” (BEPRR), and 3 on behalf of the Republican People’s Party (PPR). In what concerns those 378 local councillors, 127 are independent, 82 from BEPRR, 76 communist, 31 representatives of PDM, 30 – PPR, 15 – Social Democrat Party. Other four parties are represented by 1-2 councillors. Formuzal says that during the recent elections, a change occurred in the political options of the voters in the region, who had given 82% of the votes to the communists in the 2001 elections. So, the governor says, the voters are not anymore influenced by the party ideology, but judge the candidates by the electoral programme they promote, the way the promises are honoured, and even their personal features. A relevant example happened in Baurci village, where a candidate was running for local councillor on behalf of BEPRR and for mayor on behalf of the Christian-Democrats. According to the quoted source, the situation in Gagauzia, where no party holds the majority was predictable and it will soon change in the entire country. “In Gagauzia, the process of creating a civil society are developing faster, and the requirements for those elected are higher than in other regions of Moldova”, the governor says. Mihail Formuzal considers that after these polls, there is a need for understanding, cooperation, collaboration, compromise, so that all the elected candidates would settle together the problems of the region. He says he pleads for an equal and constructive attitude towards all mayors, including with the mayor of Comrat, his former rival in the governor’s race, and this attitude comes from his own experience, “a rebel who is not supported by the leadership from Chisinau”. According to the governor, the recent elections were the first in 12 years to by held without the pressures of Chisinau. The vote took place without incidents, all the candidates had access to the regional press, benefited from free of charge airtime, and the only remark of the observers was the fact that 90% of newscasts of the local television were about Gagauzia, and only 10% - covering the entire country.
