Ghimpu on potential coalition with Communists

Liberal leader Mihai Ghimpu said he would accept to enter a coalition including the Communist Party only if it drops its name and the traditional hammer-and-sickle symbol.

“If the Communist Party is ready to renounce being successor to the totalitarian Soviet-era communist party, then we will discuss. But they also must acknowledge the (Soviet) occupation of our country, of our language, of our identity, everything that our forefathers left us”, Mihai Ghimpu told reporters.

The statement was made Tuesday after President Nicolae Timofti met with the leaders of the parliamentary parties. Liberal-Democrat leader Vlad Filat told reporters after the meeting that inviting the Communists to join the negotiations and form a broad coalition could be an option, but the current negotiators haven't yet reached consensus on this matter. Democrat leader Marian Lupu declined to comment.
