Gerontocracy in action. Op-Ed by Victor Pelin

“If we summarily examine the history of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU), we see that five of the six leaders of CPSU, which is with one exception, had managed the party until the end of their lives, laying the basis of the so-called gerontocracy. That’s why, after the new four-year term as leader of PCRM, Vladimir Voronin will equal Joseph Stalin, who had managed the Bolshevik party for 31 years!…

Price of Communist promises

On  November 7, 2021, on the day of the Bolshevik putsch, the Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldova (PCRM) held its ninth congress. The people stopped expecting something of PCRM long ago. The Communists’ spectacular return to power in 2001 in the wake of the exploration of the people’s nostalgia for the lost paradise of the Soviet period ended with their as spectacular leaving in 2009, after the young people’s revolt of April 7. Since then, the PCRM’s influence on the political processes in society has decreased constantly in a dramatic way.

That’s why the person who could replace Vladimir Voronin as president of the party was the only intrigue of the PCRM’s congress as Vladimir Voronin himself caused an intrigue in society, saying that: “The whole country is making changes, but we, the Communists are “dishonest”. I think I will be understood. There are no such examples of holding of long terms as party leader in the history of the Communist parties. Not even Lenin or Stalin held such long terms. I do not compare myself with such cosmic figures, but I consider it’s time to leave”. But when the time of the congress came, 80-year-old Vladimir Voronin changed the intrigue for a surprise, allowing to be reelected president of PCRM for a new four-year term.

As an authentic Communist, the leader of PCRM, Vladimir Voronin, says one thing, but does another thing. This is the Communist tradition. Indeed, immediately after the putsch of November 7, 1917, the Bolsheviks promised: All power to the Soviets! Peace to the nations! Factories to the workers! Land to the peasants! We all know what happened:

  • the whole power was seized by the Bolshevik party, proclaiming the proletariat’s dictatorship in a society where the proletariat represented approximately 5% of the population of the tsarist empire. The soviets, to whom all power was to be given, were turned into fake decorations;
  • instead of the promised peace, the nations of the former tsarist empire were engaged in a civil war that lasted for six years, during November 7, 1917 – July 16, 1923. Moreover, for the sake of the world revolution, the Bolsheviks attacked Poland in 1920, proclaiming the slogan –“On our bayonets, we will bring happiness and peace to the toiling masses of mankind!”;
  • the factories promised to the workers became ownership of the supra-centralized and bureaucratized state through the agency of the executive staff. For the example of the Spanish revolution of 1936-1939, when factories were transferred under the management of the anarchist working  communities, not to become contagious for the Soviet people, the Bolsheviks became involved through the agency of the Comintern to physically annihilate the anarchist and Trotsky leaders from Spain;
  • the land promised to the peasants was nationalized, while the peasantry that represented over 80% was subject to the most banal theft through the prodrazvertka and then through the extermination and deportation of the so-called kulaks. The products confiscated from peasants were sold abroad for foreign currency and the proceeds were used to purchase technologies for the so-called great industrialization. This way, instead of land, the peasants got the GOLODOMOR.

Provoking Igor Dodon

We showed not only once, on other occasions and also above, that the leader of PCRM Vladimir Voronin is as faithful follower of the Communist tradition – promises one thing, but does another thing. However, there is one more tradition that is strictly kept up by the leader of PCRM. If we summarily examine the history of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU), we see that five of the six leaders of CPSU, which is with one exception, had managed the party until the end of their lives, laying the basis of the so-called gerontocracy. That’s why, after the new four-year term as leader of PCRM, Vladimir Voronin will equal Joseph Stalin, who had managed the Bolshevik party for 31 years! It is noteworthy that gerontocracy turned the USSR intro a state that could not be reformed. The spring of crocodile tears following the ‘death ‘of the USSR derives from here.

So, after the recent congress of PCRM, we convinced ourselves that the party’s leader Vladimir Voronin will never concede the party’s leadership and will remain faithful to the traditions of gerontocracy. In this regard, he excelled by his unmistakable humor, when he said that:  “I was decided to give up in September, but particular events influenced me, like the massive exodus of politicians. I refer to Filip, Candu, Chirtoacă... I didn’t want to form a row with them. I founded this party”.

The curiosity here resides in the fact that Voronin didn’t mention the former leader of the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova (PCRM) Igor Dodon so as to probably provoke him. It seems that Dodon swallowed the bait as he announced his withdrawal from the party’s leadership on October 18, 2021, at a distance of approximately a month of the withdrawal announcement of Vladimir Voronin. As Dodon said, PSRM in the future will not have a president and will be managed by five members of the executive committee. In such circumstances, so as not to remain deceived by his mentor Vladimir Voronin, the ex-leader of PSRM can resort to another Communist tradition. PSRM can renounce the management of the five in favor of an eventual band of the four. This would be realty a surprise matching Voronin’s recent surprise. This way, Voronin and Dodon would enter the completion of the most faithful defenders of the Communist tradition.

Conclusions

The revolutionary slogans disseminated by PCRM before its recent congress do not match it. There is an axiom – revolution and gerontocracy exclude each other. To project a political future, the younger members of PCRM, if the party still has such, should learn several quotes of former really famous world leaders, such as Georges Clemenceau and Winston Churchill:

  • If a man is not a Socialist/Communist by the time he is 20, he has no heart. Any man who is still a Socialist/Communist at age 40 has no head;
  • The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings. The inherent virtue of Socialism is the equal sharing of miseries.
