Germany to invest €5m in energy efficiency projects in Moldova

The Government of Germany during the next three years will invest €5 million in energy efficiency projects in the Republic of Moldova and will strengthen the capacities of the Ministry of Energy and the Energy Efficiency Agency that will be reorganized into the National Center for Sustainable Energy. The financial resources will be allocated through the agency of the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ Moldova), IPN reports.

“The Republic of Moldova needs assistance in the transition to green energy and in decarbonization, especially for significantly reducing the costs of energy for citizens and businesses given that about 50% of the energy consumed in our country goes on building maintenance. This is a long road that we yet need to cover and GIZ will help us to accelerate the speed of implementing the decarbonization agenda,” Minister of Energy Victor Parlicov said in the event held to announce the initiative.

Germany’s Ambassador to Moldova Margret Maria Uebber said that GIZ in time implemented a number of projects to improve the energy efficiency of public buildings, such as schools, preschools and hospitals. “Energy security became an important question for Moldova. The Government not only managed to successfully end dependence on Russian gas, but also undertook to end dependence on one source and to diversify its sources of energy. In this regard, renewable energy and energy efficiency play a major role,” stated the German diplomat.

Germany will also offer assistance in developing the Residential Energy Efficiency Fund that will be managed by the National Center for Sustainable Energy and will offer subsidies to owners of individual homes and apartments. The involved functionaries of the local public authorities will benefit from support and will learn good practices.
