An international summer school themed “Multilingualism and Multiculturalism in the Black Sea Region: Moldova and Southwestern Ukraine” was opened in Chisinau. During August 22- September 11, 16 students and doctorate applicants from Germany will study Romanian at the Romanian Language House in Chisinau and the social, political, ethnic and cultural situation in Moldova and will then travel to Comrat and Odessa, Info-Prim Neo reports. Deputy head of the Moldova-Institut Lepzig Vasile Dumbrava, one of the organizers of the summer school, said most of the participants are bachelors of politology, law, European studies and philology. “The things they will study in Moldova will be useful to them when writing their Bachelor and doctoral dissertations,” he said. In the opening of the summer school, German Ambassador in Chisinau Berthold Johannes told the 16 young persons that in Moldova they will be able to study many interesting issues. “70% of Moldova's population speaks Romanian. The rest speak Russians, Ukrainian and other languages,” he said. Presidential adviser on European integration matters Dan Dungaciu transmitted the Acting President Mihai Ghimpu's message that multiculturalism in Moldova is not only a physical reality as it means respect for and coexistence between different values. Jan-Peter Abraham, teacher at the German Academic Exchange Service, said the participants in the international summer school will help promote Moldova's image abroad. Alexandru Bantos, the head of the Romanian Language House, said the guests will be taught by experienced teachers. He assured the students will know Romanian rather well in several weeks. Project coordinator and teacher of Romanian Alexei Acsan said the students will study from textbooks and with the help of teaching aids, including movies. He stated the students at the end of the course will take tests and receive a certificate proving that they completed the course. From Chisinau, the participants will go to Comrat and then to Odessa.
