Gender stereotypes and perceptions of gender roles moderated, CPD

Even if the problem of gender stereotypes is significant, in Moldova the tendency to attenuate these is robust. For example, 32% of the citizens in 2009 considered that the women were less capable and could not occupy executive posts. In 2018, the figure decreased to 19%, while in 2021 (during the election campaign) – to 12%. This tendency is valid for all the gender stereotypes, such as those related to domestic chores or traditional roles of men, shows an analysis by the Center “Partnership for Development” that is quoted by IPN.

Starting with 2009, the Center “Partnership for Development” has annually calculated the Gender Equality Index that measures gender equality on a scale of 0 (absolute gender inequality) to 100 (full gender equality). The index is determined for six strategic areas, including gender roles and stereotypes.

According to the analysis, progress was made in 2009-2021 both as regards the Gender Equality Index and the Gender Roles and Stereotypes Sub-Index. Slowly, but confidently, the women and men in Moldova become more progressive and less influenced by gender stereotypes.

Also, the preferences concerning the representation of men in elective posts are less noticeable. Even if a relevant part of the citizens continue to prefer a man in elective posts at the local and national levels, the tendencies declined the past 15 years. In 2006, 32% of the citizens preferred a man in the post of MP. In 2021, the figure declined to 19%. 50% of the citizens wanted a male President in 2006, but the figure declined to 29% in 2021.
