Gagauzia's Bashkan intended to depart for Istanbul, Minister says

Gagauzia's Bashkan, Evghenia Gutul, who was detained last night at Chisinau International Airport, intended to board a flight to Istanbul, Turkey. Authorities are also investigating the possibility that the Bashkan planned to leave the territory of the Republic of Moldova without returning. These details were provided by the Minister of Internal Affairs, Daniella Misail-Nichitin, in response to media inquiries, IPN reports.

“The lady appeared in the information system following a routine check at the border crossing point. Given her status on the watchlist, measures were taken in accordance with standard procedures. The competent authorities were notified, and as you know, she is currently detained by the National Anticorruption Center (CNA),” stated Daniella Misail-Nichitin.

“We are not politicizing; we are acting in accordance with the current legislation,” the minister added when asked to comment on accusations from the Bashkan’s allies, who claim this is a politically motivated case.

Following the Bashkan’s detention, her supporters gathered in front of the CNA, despite the late hour and rainy weather. Today, a rally was organized in Comrat, demanding the release of Evghenia Gutul. Among the demonstrators in front of the Gagauzia Executive Committee were many participants from previous protests, including supporters of fugitive Ilan Shor.
