Gagauz MPs discuss resignation of Executive Committee because they "no longer believe in Shor's promises"

The resignation of the Executive Committee could be discussed at the next session of the People's Assembly of Gagauzia, IPN correspondent in the region reports.

The People's Assembly deputies are dissatisfied with the fact that the Gagauz executive rejects the proposals put forward by them, including on the increase of the fund to support children in need of complicated surgeries.

The deputies recalled that fugitive oligarch Ilan Shor promised a "dream land" and investments of 500 million euros in Gagauzia, but "instead he blocks even what can be realized from budget funds".

In 2016, a fund was created in Gagauzia to support children in need of expensive medical services. Local authorities annually transfer about one million lei from the budget to this fund. This year, however, MPs decided to supplement the fund by two million lei and presented the amendments to the Executive Committee, but the latter did not support the proposal.

Deputy Ilya Uzun, a member of the Bashkan's team, said that the executive body would have submitted a draft to the deputies to increase the fund by 50 percent. He also claimed that seriously ill children receive help thanks to the Executive Committee's cooperation with the Eurasia Foundation (which collaborates with fugitive oligarch Ilan Shor). However, there is no official or unofficial data on how the Foundation would contribute to the surgeries.

By a majority of votes, MEPs repeatedly backed the supplementing of the fund by two million lei and thus the Executive Committee is forced to implement the decision of the People's Assembly.

At the same session on Friday, deputies blocked amendments to the Electoral Code of Gagauzia. Among them were those that abolished the requirement for candidates for the posts of Bashkan and deputy to live in the region and speak the Gagauz language. The absence of some of these amendments allowed Shor's supporters to enter the Executive Committee without knowing the Gagauz language.

Deputy Alexandru Tarnavschi called the current Executive Committee "dysfunctional" and pledged to prepare a list of admitted violations, which would allow to discuss the dismissal of the Executive Committee, otherwise, he said, "the situation will get worse day by day".

It should be noted that it was the deputies of the People's Assembly who approved (by a majority of votes, but not in corpore), in October 2023, the Executive Committee's program, based on Shor's promises. The program included plans to build an airport, create 7,000 jobs, reduce natural gas and electricity tariffs, increase pensions and salaries, etc.
