Gagauz language celebrated in Comrat

The residents of Comrat celebrated the Gagauz Language Day with music and dances. Deputy head of the Executive Committee of Gagauzia Nicolai Stoianov has told IPN that the Gagauz authorities aim to celebrate this day with more and more pomp every year.

On April 27, young people marched on the streets of Comrat, carrying the flags of Moldova and Gagauzia. An exhibition of works by craftsmen and plastic artists was mounted in the center of the town. Bands and singers dressed in folk costumes gave a concert in the Gagauz language in the Victory Square.

The festivities involved members of the Executive Committee, the administration of the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia and local deputies. All the statements were made in Gagauz.

Nicolai Stoianov said that over 100,000 lei has been allocated this year for printing books in the Gagauz language. There will be organized seminars and scientific conference for promoting and preserving the language.

The Gagauz language has been celebrated since 1957. Until 2012, the festivities were held on July 30. Last year, the holiday was transferred to April 27, when Gagauz cleric and educator Mihail Ciachir was born.
