Four writers awarded for their courage to write and talk about war

The Moldovan edition of the Romanian magazine Timpul (“The Time”) staged the third "Courage" awards ceremony. The magazine's awards were established in the winter of 2022, together with the launch of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The members of the editorial team noted that the entire "intellectual class has stood in solidarity with the Ukrainian people, organized public demonstrations, wrote and sang about the pain of our neighbors." Thus, it was decided to award the most courageous voices of the year, IPN reports.

"We express symbolic gratitude to these people, who have the courage to write about the horrors that happen a few kilometers from us," the executive director of the Moldovan edition of Timpul Maria Ivanov said during the event.

At this year’s “Courage” Awards Gala, four writers won trophies.

Angela Aramă got the trophy for the book "Two Years of UkraMine". "I cannot imagine that we could leave this world to those who want to snatch it from our arms. Since 2022, I have been writing daily about everything that is happening in Ukraine," said Angela Aramă.

Two writers from Romania were also awarded. Ruxandra Cesereanu won the prize for the Attitudes column. Cristian Ciulică won the trophy for the book "In the body of war: The story of fighters from Transnistrian through interviews".

"I would attach great importance to these local wars, such as the one in the Transnistrian region, because they provide support for the big conflicts we are seeing. From the interviews I conducted, I realized that there was so much unassumed pain in the war," said Cristian Ciulică.

The trophy for courage went to Iya Kiva, a poet from Ukraine "for her resistance through poetry and for the courage with which she speaks about war".

"I am glad that we manage to support you through different forms, whether it is a cultural project or a project to finance the magazine, and we can thus pass on this message of courage, of our love for the field of culture, our national values," said secretary of state of the Ministry of Culture Andrei Chistol.

The event also involved representatives of the embassies of Romania and Ukraine in the Republic of Moldova.
