Four judges placed in remand and under hour arrest

Four judges of those detained in a case of corruption on October 23 were placed in remand and under house arrest today, October 24, IPN reports.

The Chisinau City Court issued a 30-day arrest warrant against judge Liubovi Brânză of the Chisinau Appeals Court and decided that judge Galina Moscalchuk of the same court will stay under house arrest for 30 days and will be unable to interact with persons involved in the case.

The prosecutors asked for 30 days of arrest for judge Svetlana Tizu of the Chisinau City Court. The court admitted partially the request, ruling the judge will stay for 20 days in the remand prison of the National Anticorruption Center. The lawyer for the judge said the decision is groundless and they will appeal it.

Another judge involved in the case was also placed under hour arrest for 30 days. The persecutor who made the request avoided revealing the name of the judge, invoking the presumption of innocence.

When the news article was published, the court was considering the detention measure for the fifth judge.

Ten persons, among whom five judges, a prosecutor, a lawyer, a judiciary assistant, a doctor and a private individual, were detained on October 23. The judges are suspected of asking for and receiving large sums of money for passing favorable judgments in a number examined criminal cases. The lawyer and the prosecutor acted as intermediaries in the transfer of the money. The decisions were to be pronounced in favor of the doctor and the private individual.
