The ex-president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Anne Brasseur called on the sides involved in the dissension in Chisinau – the authorities and the protesters - to be calm and have a dialogue. In an interview for Radio Free Europe, the official said the PACE and the Council of Europe do not support a particular government or Premier, but want the respect for the law and democracy to be ensured, IPN reports.

Referring to the protests mounted in Chisinau, the former PACE president said she makes a public call to the two sides – the demonstrators and the authorities – to remain calm. ”Violence is not the answer. It solves noting. Calmness is needed and the principles of democracy should be respected,” she stated.

According to Anne Brasseur, the dialogue is the only instrument that can lead to a solution. “The protesters must accept the dialogue and must not destroy things and democracy too. Democracy is built with difficulty, but is destroyed easily. I request the authorities in Chisinau to appropriately respond to the street demonstrations and not to react disproportionally,” she said.

The official noted that it is not the PACE’s business to support or not support one government or another. The governments change, but the PACE is interested in the rule of law, the implementation of the international regulations and the respect for the country’s Constitution.
