The ex-president of Banca de Economii (BEM) Grigore Gachikevich, who three days ago was arrested by officers of the National Anticorruption Center in a new case concerning the bank frauds, will spend the next 30 days in custody. Such a decision was taken by the Buiucani Court on December 4. Grigore Gachikevich‘s lawyers intend to appeal the court decision, IPN reports.

For their part, the prosecutors said the yasked for custody because there are reasonable suspicions that the former BEM president could coordinate the depositions with the other participants in the trial and could formulate different versions for avoiding punishment or for diminishing his role in the offenses.

Grigore Gachikevich is investigated as a suspect within a new criminal case concerning the violation of the lending rules at the bank when he managed BEM. According to the National Anticorruption Center, three economic entities had been illegally issued with loans to the value of 260 000 000 lei in that period. Under the legislation, the violation of lending rules carries a maximum penalty of seven years’ imprisonment.

Five persons from the former administration of BEM have been charged in similar cases so far. In a new hearing on December 1, the judges merged a number of criminal cases concerning the frauds committed at BEM. Among those accused are the former heads of the Lending, Security and Law Divisions.
