Foreign minister discusses security issues with NATO deputy secretary general

Moldova supports the need for a dialogue on European security and calls for it to take place in a peaceful and constructive atmosphere, said Nicu Popescu, Moldova’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, in a telephone conversation with the NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana.

Nicu Popescu says that in the case of NATO’s dialogue with the Russian Federation, which must be transparent, the Republic of Moldova advocates comprehensive and inclusive discussions on strengthening European security, taking into account the interests and concerns of all countries concerned, including the Republic of Moldova.

The head of Moldovan diplomacy noted that Moldova’s dialogue with NATO takes place within the framework set by the constitutional principle of neutrality, which does not mean isolation and does not prevent the development of cooperation in those areas that correspond to national interests. “Only the people can decide which are the most appropriate ways to ensure security and only we can choose the necessary solutions according to the will of the people,” Nicu Popescu wrote on his Facebook account.

Also, Nicu Popescu remarked during the phone conversation that Moldova’s neutrality must be respected through the withdrawal of Russian troops from our country’s territory.
