Flowers for those who died in war for liberating Bessarabia from fascism
War veterans, ordinary people and officials Wednesday laid flowers at the Memorial Complex “Eternity” on the occasion of 67 years of the victory over fascism in the battle for the territory between the Prut and Nistru Rivers. The veterans said that every year they come to the memorial with tears in their eyes and remember the war and this important day, when Moldova was liberated from fascism, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“The war in Moldova ended on August 24, 1944. Moldova was liberated from the fascist occupation and peace returned to this land. This day is significant for Moldova as well as other states,” said Acting President Marian Lupu.
Larisa Calinina, head of the Veterans Association of Buiucani district, said that her father was killed in that war. “I’m the daughter of war. I hardly remember that period, but know exactly what happened then. I contributed to building this state, worked for it and now live on a miserable pension of 900 lei. The authorities should think about those who lived during the war period as their number decreases every year,” she said.
Semen Mihailovici, who took part in the liberation war, said the Memorial Complex “Eternity” is the place where hundreds of thousands of people who died in war are commemorated. “It is very important to remember those times and the participants in the war. The young people should be taught to defend the country according to these traditions. The memorial should bring together all the people, regardless of social status, age, nationality,” said the veteran.
Ivan Astashev, another participant in the war who is now 91, said his memories of the war are horrible as he saw many people dying. “We now have to learn the lesson and keep the human values. Those who died must be commemorated by the young generation,” he stated.
The Iasi-Chisinau operation of August 24, 1944 ended with heavy casualties on both sides. Thousands of soldiers were killed in battle.
