Flood early warning project launched in Edinet

A project to develop a local early warning system in case of floods in the regions of the Prut River was launched in Edinet. The project will be implemented in areas that face the risk of flooding and will contribute to the reduction of the impact of floods on the population, IPN reports.

The project will have an impact on Criva, Drepcauti, Sirauti and Lipcani villages of Moldova and the Ukrainian regions of Odessa, Cernauti  and Vinita. The flood early warning system will help prevent casualties and will minimize the damage caused in exceptional situations.

The General Inspectorate for Emergencies said the project will be implemented until next February. When it is completed, the flood early warning system will become functional. The value of the project is €330,000, with the money being allocated by the European Union through UNDP Moldova.

Similar flood early warning systems are used in Romania, Slovakia and Germany.
