Flights might be resumed at 12.00 today
The Moldovan airspace will remain closed by noon. The air traffic authorities extended the term owing to the volcanic ash cloud coming from southern Iceland, which paralyzed most of the airports in Europe, Info-Prim Neo reports.
According to the director general of the Chisinau International Airport Roman Podkorytov, the flights were canceled as the ash particles could choke jet engines enough to shut them down. The passengers who were to fly during the last three days had to comply with an adjusted schedule.
The ash cloud belched by an erupting volcano in Iceland disrupted air traffic over much of Europe. Over 20 countries have airspace restrictions, many banning all non-emergency flights. The cloud also thwarted many political leaders and heads of state in their intention to take part in the funeral of Polish President Lech Kaczynski.
