First round of Romania’s Presidential Election canceled

Romania’s Constitutional Court has unanimously annulled the first round of the presidential election. According to a press release issued by the Court, the electoral process for electing the President of Romania will be entirely restarted, IPN reports.

The government is tasked with setting a new date for the presidential election, along with a revised timetable for carrying out the necessary actions. This decision is universally binding.

The Constitutional Court judges made the decision during an emergency meeting on Friday, convened in response to numerous requests for the annulment of the presidential election. These requests cited declassified documents from the Supreme Council of National Defense, which revealed that the campaign of candidate Călin Georgescu was the result of manipulation orchestrated from abroad.
