First President launches collection of memories “Labyrinth of destiny”

Moldova’s first President Mircea Snegur has launched the collection of memories “Labyrinth of destiny” in six volumes. Before the launch, Mircea Snegur told the journalists that ne now feels accomplished, while the books he wrote cover the period during which he managed Moldova, IPN reports.

Mircea Snegur put down his memories on over 4,400 pages. He worked for over 10 years on the books, informing himself including from the archives of state institutions. The text is accompanied by over 500 pictures about the former head of state’s life and work.

According to Mircea Snegur, the “Labyrinth of destiny” analyzes the covered stages that had a significant impact on Moldova’s history, including the national renaissance movement, democratization, reforms, establishments and development of international relations.

The first volume titled “Road to the Olympus” covers the period until September 1990. The first part of the book is biographical and relates the childhood, adolescence and student days of the first President. It also deals with the deportations, forced collectivization and organized famine. The second part is about the national liberation movement, the first protests, the election of the first Parliament and the first head of state.

The second volume “Independence: between euphoria and tumult” refers to the period between September 1990 and the end of 1993. The head of state speaks about the separatist movements in the Transnistrian region and Gagauzia, saying the anti-constitutional actions were organized by the Kremlin.

The third volume is entitled “Building of the state”, the fourth – “The Republic of Moldova and the world”, the fifth – “Market economy: first steps”, while the sixth - “Pressure of transition”.

The launch was attended by current President Nicolae Timofti and the second President Petru Lucinschi as well as by politicians, scientists and ambassadors.

Nicolae Timofti said that Mircea Snegur helped build systems that ensured the functioning of the young state. He underlined that the work of the first head of state contributed to the current successes of Moldova – coming closer to the EU by initialing the Association Agreement.

Head of Parliament Igor Corman said that the author in his memoirs speaks about the criticism leveled at the country’s first government, but those who criticize must understand that it is easier to speak than to do something and it is easier to destroy than to create something.

The first two books were presented to the public in 2007 and 2008.
