Firefighters continue to struggle with fire at National Philharmonic

The firemen continue to fight the fire hotbeds inside the building of the National Philharmonic “Sergei Lunkevich” in Chisinau. The operation was suspended at night and was resumed at 6am, IPN reports.

The General Inspectorate for Emergencies said that eight firefighting vehicles are currently at the scene. A crane is used to take the roof to pieces.

Contacted by IPN, the Philharmonic’s director Svetlana Bivol said that access to the institution is banned as the walls can collapse. Yesterday they managed to save the costumes and instruments of the Symphonic Orchestra, the Folk Music Orchestra “Folclor” and the Concertino Accordion Band as well as scores, including of the Academic Choir “Doina”. Regrettably, the flames destroyed the symphonic library and concert pianos.

Spaces will be identified in concert with the authorities so that the artists could continue work.

The fire at the National Philharmonic started at about midday on September 24. The firefighters managed to localize it in over four hours. The ceiling of the building’s main hall caved in. The cause of fire is yet to be found out.
