Firefighters continue to ensure fire safety at the Giurgiulești International Free Port where the second silo with sunflower groats caught fire. The owner of the silos asked a specialized company to take away the silo damaged by fire, IPN reports.
The Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) said it became involved in this case to determine the cause of fire. An investigation will be conducted to see how the technical and security norms were obeyed when exploiting the storage tower.
According to the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, five firefighting vehicles with 13 employees are working at the scene to cool down the silo and to ensure safety in the area so as to avoid a situation of risk.
A similar fire at the grain storage facility of the Giurgiulești International Free Port happened on January 16. The fire started after a storage tower with over 1,000 tonnes of sunflower groats collapsed. The fire was localized in about five hours, but was fully extinguished in several days.
The first fire at the Port occurred on September 15 last year. Then, two metal silos with sunflower groats with the volume of 1,200 m3 each collapsed. On November 13, the temperature inside two of the four silos rose to 100℃ and one of these started to burn on December 30, while the groats were being taken out of the storage tower.
