A 67-year-old man died in a fire that broke out on Christmas Eve in a residence in Bălți. Three other individuals were rescued alive by firefighters and transported to the hospital in an unconscious state, IPN reports.
The General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU) stated that the emergency call was received shortly after 8:30 PM. According to initial reports, an annex of a house was engulfed in flames. Three teams of rescuers and firefighters were dispatched to the scene.
Firefighters quickly evacuated four individuals lying on the floor inside the house and annex. A 36-year-old man and two women, aged 53 and 63, survived the fire and were taken to the hospital. Unfortunately, it was too late for the 67-year-old man, whose death was confirmed by medics at the fire-ravaged house.
Initial investigations suggest the fire was likely caused by an unextinguished cigarette. The exact causes and circumstances are under investigation.
In this context, IGSU reiterates its warning to citizens that smoking indoors and negligence in handling ignition sources can lead to fires with fatal consequences. Over the past 24 hours, rescuers and firefighters have responded to 40 risk situations.
