Parliament gave a final reading to the bill to ratify the Agreement with the U.S. Government on the sale of the site of the former Republican Stadium to the U.S. for construction of a New Embassy Compound in Chisinau. The lot will be sold by the authorities at the market price, IPN reports.

“During many years, this lot had been left to go to ruin, while different political groups were competing for it, pursuing goals. The development of this central area will have a major positive impact on the city and the attractiveness of the area. The U.S.’s request to sell the land was granted by the Government of the Republic of Moldova in 2018, while the Constitutional Court confirmed the legality of this decision. Today, Parliament executed a decision by the Constitutional Court and fulfills its diplomatic commitments towards a long-term partner. After 15 years of the demolition of the Republican Stadium by the regime of Voronin, we ultimately succeed in fructifying this lot,” said PAS MP Radu Marian.

The lot that is 5.1814 ha in area is located at 12 Tighina St in Chisinau. The Public Property Agency was authorized to determine the value of the state-owned lot. The institution’s administration said that the historical gates and the entrance of the former Republican Stadium will be renovated so as to emphasize the historical significance of the site. The U.S. undertook to earmark a part of the lot for a park that will be accessible to the public.
