Files on repressed persons open to public

The National Archive allowed access to the first 5,000 files on politically repressed persons, which were transferred to the institution by the Security and Information Service (SIS), National Archive director Petru Vicol stated for Info-Prim Neo. The other files transmitted by the SIS and the Ministry of the Interior are being ordered. Petru Vicol said all the files are kept in the stores of the National Archive. The Government has not yet honored its commitment to provide a building where to store the about 15,000 files on repressed persons, transferred by the SIS and the Ministry. According to the SIS, more than 31,000 persons had been convicted in cases concerning political matters. Over 5,000 of them had been sentenced to death, while another 3,000 died in jails and remand centers. The Ministry of the Interior’s files show more than 12,000 families have been recognized as victims of political repression. The first files on persons subjected to political repression during 1920-1951 were moved from the special store of the Security and Information Service to the National Archive last November. The then Acting President Mihai Ghimpu said a number of measures will be taken to support the National Archive, including allocating money for setting up new storerooms for the files. .
