The Municipal Council decided that the Chisinau Bus Company will be provided with 50 new buses outfitted with air conditioning and low floor so as to ensure easier access for elderly people and persons in wheelchairs. The decision to purchase units of transport was taken in the March 16 meeting of the Chisinau Municipal Council, IPN reports.

The local elected officials voiced hope that when all these modern buses are bought, the citizens of Chisinau will prefer the public transport to the personal cars.

“I demand that none of the new buses should be put on the routes that were leased out. Those who had preferential relations with decision makers of the City Hall managed to take control of the profitable routes. We will not accept placing new buses on Route No. 22, which belongs to Iurie Topala (of the Liberal Party),” said councilor Ilian Casu.

In today’s meeting, the councilors could not agree again on the assembly of buses. The municipality intends to allocate 150 million lei from the municipal budget for renewing the vehicles of the Chisinau Bus Company during the next five years. Currently, the company has 135 buses, 80% of which are overused.
