Farmers protest in front of Parliament Building

The farmers who are dissatisfied with the size and way in which compensations are provided for the losses sustained because of drought and with provisions of the budgetary-fiscal policy for next year are protesting in front of the Parliament Building. They brought a number of tractors right next to the central entrance. A section of Ștefan cel Mare și Sfânt Blvd was inaccessible to traffic. The protesters said they want a dialogue with the MPs. An ambulance is on guard nearby, IPN reports.

One of the protesters said the farmers were mistreated by the police officers and teargas was used against them. A number of carabineers needed medical care.

PAS MP Mihai Popșoi came out and said that the PAS and PPPDA will submit a motion of no confidence against the Chicu Government in today’s sitting. “Next week, the Government should leave!” he stated. The MP called on the farmers to behave calmly. The protesters chanted “Down with the Government!” and “Snap Elections!”.

Later, representatives of the protesters went to discussions with MPs of the opposition, who informed them that they will insist on their amendment to maintain the VAT rate of 8% on primary agricultural production.

The Parliament sitting was to start at 12 noon, but was then transferred to 1:30pm.
