Families should have 2-3 children to keep demographic balance in Moldova

In order to maintain the demographic balance in Moldova, every family must give birth and educate 2-3 children, says Boris Galca, a deputy manager of the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) in Moldova, Info-Prim Neo reports. “For the last 18 years, the population in Moldova is dwindling, what makes it impossible to keep the balance between the number of the people who die and are born. The demographic decline can be halted only by encouraging young families to have 2-3 children,” Boris Gâlca told a conference on the occasion of the World Population Day. The UNFPA representative says many Moldovan youths postpone their marriages and the birth of the first child. Other priorities are there: studies, material benefits, career. The family values are set on the second plane. Boris Galca believes the authorities should invest more in maternal health. “In crisis time, it's necessary that more medical services and medicines are offered for free. The birth indemnity should be bigger than 1,500 lei,” he says. According to him, the social assistance system is already severely affected by the phenomenon of aging population, but the most difficult period is still to come. “The big wave for Moldova will start in 2012, when more and more retire, and this is going to become too big a burden for the young. The social protection system from Moldova is not ready to face such an economic burden,” Boris Galca underlined. The World Population Day is marked on July 11.
