Expert about nomination of prosecutor: There are questions here

Vladislav Gribincea, director of the Legal Resources Center of Moldova, considers the contest to choose the candidate for prosecutor general is a much better formula than the methods used until now. However, there are questions as regards the way the candidates are appraised and there is room for the better here.

“I think the Superior Council of Prosecutors owes an explanation about the appraisal of each of the candidates so that everyone understands why a particular candidate won,” Vladislav Gribincea stated in an interview for Radio Free Europe, quoted by IPN. According to the jurist, the future reform of the prosecution service will depend on the prosecutors’ will, whether they want a change or not.

Asked if Eduard Harunjen is an apolitical personage, the director of the Legal Resources Center said Harunjen is a career prosecutor, but there are enough questions as to his career as well. “He has served as an anticorruption prosecutor for many years, in the period when a number of criminal cases weren’t investigated, including the theft of the US$1 billion. He was involved in the investigation of the events of April 2009. Surely there are questions as to his property. I didn’t see a clear explanation as regards the origin of his possessions,” stated Vladislav Gribincea.

As to the property of the prosecutor general-elect, Vladislav Gribincea said this had a house in an elite quarter occupying 10 ares and the published images showed an impressive building for a prosecutor who worked only as prosecutor all his life. In this regard, Harunjen should provide some explanations for the public.

The Superior Council of Prosecutors on December 7 chose Eduard Harunjen as winner of the contest to fill the post of prosecutor general. He is to be confirmed to post by the Head of State.
