If a referendum on Moldova’s entry into the European Union or the Eurasian Union was held, 44% of the respondents of a Public Opinion Barometer (POB) would choose the Eurasian Union, while almost 31% the EU. The rest would not take part in the plebiscite or are undecided. The POB results were presented in a news conference at IPN.
If a referendum on Moldova’s membership in the EU was held next Sunday, 38% of those polled would vote for, while 37.3% against. The others are undecided or do not intend to vote. Over 43% of those surveyed think the country would enjoy more advantages if it formed part of the EU, while almost 40% consider it would be disadvantaged.
If a referendum on Moldova’s admission into the Eurasian Union was held next Sunday, 52.8% of the respondents would vote for, while 23.7% against. 45% of those polled consider the country would only gain if it joined the Eurasian Union, while over 25% said the opposite.
As regards the name of the official language of Moldova, over 72% of the respondents consider this should be called ‘Moldovan’, while over 22.8% said it is ‘Romanian’. If a referendum on Moldova’s union with Romania was held next Sunday, 63.8% would vote against, while 15.6% in favor. The others would not take part or do not know how to answer.
If a referendum on Moldova’s entry into NATO was held, 57.4% of the respondents would vote against, while 10.9% in favor. The others would abstain or haven’t yet decided.
Some 57% of those interviewed said they have a positive attitude to the Communist regime that ruled before 1990. Almost 57% of the respondents regret the fact that the USSR fell apart, while over 47% would like the USSR and the Socialist system to be restored. If a referendum on the country’s entry into the USSR (if it had existed) was held next Sunday, over 48% of those polled would vote for.
Among the most trusted foreign political personalities are the President of Russia Vladimir Putin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, President of Romania Klaus Iohannis, and U.S. President Barak Obama.
The poll was carried out between October 6 and 16 and covered a sample of 1,109 people from 82 communities. The margin of sampling error is 2.9%.
