The EU market may be liberalized for the Moldovan wines in half a year, considers economic analyst Corina Gaibu. She stated for IPN that the bureaucratic process in the EU is reasonably accelerated. The decision to liberalize the market is taken by the EU member states. Afterward, this decision is to be approved by the European Parliament.

“Half a year is a very good term. The EU is interested in helping Moldova to improve its economic situation,” said Corina Gaibu. According to her, the Moldovan authorities should also take measures to accelerate the liberalization of the market, including to adopt legislation and to ensure phytosanitary control. The producers that want to orient themselves to a new market must meet the European standards. This is an obligatory condition.

“Russia in fact helped this thing to happen. It did us a favor. The embargo of 2006 was like a vaccine for us and now we go through the new embargo much easier and see even its positive aspects,” stated Corina Gaibu.

The European Union decided to lend a hand to Moldova by liberalizing its market for Moldovan winemakers. EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development Dacian Ciolos announced on Wednesday that he will urge all the EU member states to raise Moldovan wine imports quota before the enforcement of the Free Trade Agreement. Until now the Moldovan producers were able to export 240,000 hectoliters of wine per year under the Autonomous Trade Preferences.
