In the event of a total halt in natural gas supplies from Russia to the left bank of the Nistru River, starting with January 1, 2025, and electricity production problems, the European Union intends to support the Republic of Moldova to overcome the crisis, IPN reports.
The statement was made by the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola at a press conference after her participation at the European Council meeting on December 19.
Metsola stressed that there is a high probability that Russia will stop gas deliveries on January 1, 2025 to the Transnistrian region, gas that is used to generate electricity for the entire country.
"We must cushion the impact of Russia’s expected halting of gas supply to Transnistria, which would effectively mean that Transnistria goes dark on the 1st of January," the EP President explained.
In this connection, according to her, the European Union must intervene to support the citizens of the Republic of Moldova, who chose a European path. "In that case, we have to be ready to step in quickly in order to ensure that people do not face enormous unsustainable bills," Metsola stressed.
"I think there will be growing consensus for there to be an immediate solution to help Moldovans pay the bills that they would not be able to afford if the provision of the supply is cut on the 31st of December... My message to EU leaders was received well and that is what we need to do and we’ll be ready for it.”
The authorities of the Republic of Moldova are already preparing for a possible energy crisis. Chisinau agreed emergency measures, including plans for the evacuation of people from the Transnistrian region, in the worst scenario.
Since January 16, a state of emergency in the energy sector has been in force in the country.
