Energy renovation brings 30% savings and comfort to a kindergarten in Drochia

Kindergarten No. 5 in Drochia has made significant strides toward sustainability and energy efficiency thanks to an ambitious energy renovation project. Supported by the European Union, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the Drochia City Hall, the project significantly improved the institution's energy efficiency by reducing energy losses and enhancing thermal comfort. As a result, heating costs have decreased by approximately 30%, IPN reports.

“Little Red Riding Hood’ kindergarten was built in 1972, and over the years, we faced many problems, including mold and dampness, especially during the cold season. The energy renovation was a lifesaver,” shared the kindergarten's director, Raisa Tomac.

The project included thermal insulation of the walls and replacing the roof. To add an aesthetic touch, the building was decorated with a mural, creating a fresh and welcoming environment for the children and staff.

Nina Cereteu, the mayor of Drochia, emphasized the project's importance: “This kindergarten is one of the largest early childhood education institutions in the city, and our goal was to provide children with excellent learning conditions. Now, we have an energy-efficient building and a warmer, more pleasant environment for both children and staff,” said Mayor Cereteu.

The savings were evident from the first winter after the renovation. “Heating bills decreased by 30% compared to previous years. Additionally, thermal comfort improved significantly, providing a much better environment for the children”, added Cereteu.

Staff members have also noticed the difference. “Previously, cold air would blow through the old windows, and we had to bundle up during music activities. Now, it’s completely different - warm and comfortable,” said artistic director Ecaterina Cojocaru-Turcan.

For the children, the changes are clear. “Temperatures in some rooms now reach 26 degrees, even with some radiators set to a minimum. Moreover, energy savings are substantial”, highlighted Raisa Tomac.

By reducing heating costs, Drochia City Hall has been able to save money, which will be reinvested into other kindergarten projects. “Our goal was to improve energy efficiency, cut costs, and use the savings to enhance conditions further. For example, we plan to install solar panels to generate electricity and hot water”, added the mayor.

This energy renovation project has been successful not only economically but also in creating a friendly and safe environment for children. Investments in energy efficiency can transform educational institutions into models of sustainability, benefiting both children and the wider community.

“This project is not just an achievement for ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ kindergarten but also a best-practice example in energy efficiency that can be replicated across the country. It’s a significant step toward a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future”, stated a representative of the National Center for Sustainable Energy (CNED).

The energy renovation of “Little Red Riding Hood” kindergarten is a success story of how investments in energy can enhance quality of life while reducing environmental impact.
