The campaign preceding the Governor elections in Gagauzia is dirty, while the elections turned into a business in time, considers the dean of the Faculty of Economy of the Comrat State University Constantin Taushanji, who said that only new people, possibly even from outside the country, could make really radical changes that would improve the situation in the region.
Constantin Taushanji said that in the 20 years since elections started to be held in the Gagauz region, there is only one course there, determined by inertia. Therefore, things after the elections will definitely not change. Each next elected Governor takes over, but the state of affairs remains the same. In the region, as in the whole country, people are needed to make radical changes, possibly even foreigners.
Twelve contenders were registered as election runners, but one of them later withdrew. According to Constantin Taushanji, though there are many candidates for the post of Governor, there is no personality who could bring the change. The election runners transmit the messages of those who are behind them. This campaign is also marked by manipulation as foreign personalities appear alongside candidates and influence the public opinion. In such conditions, it’s rather improbable that the voters’ choice will not be influenced by forces from outside and will be conscious.
The first round of elections in Gagauzia will take place on March 22. The second round, if it’s necessary, will be held in April 5. Simultaneously, there will be held elections to choose members of the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia, in the constituencies Congaz and Gaidar.
Constantin Taushanji headed the Executive Committee of Comrat district and was a member of Moldova’s first Parliament and voted the Declaration of Independence. In 1997 – 2004, he held the post of mayor of Comrat town. Constantin Taushanji also played the role of a conciliator during the October 1990 events, when about 100,000 volunteer warriors surrounded Gagauzia. He is one of the authors of the project to create the territorial-administrative unit “Gagauz Yeri-Găgăuzia” and was among those who proposed introducing a common tax for entrepreneurs in Gagauzia. He is now the dean of the Faculty of Economy of the Comrat State University.
