Historian and publicist Gheorghe Cojocaru said that even if the tenure of incumbent President Nicolae Timofti expires this month, the government coalition does not seem preoccupied with the problem of election of a new head of state. At the same time, the election of the President is no longer a matter resolved exclusively in Parliament, IPN reports.

“Even the leader of the Communists Vladimir Voronin, who seems to be yet dreaming of returning to the top post of power, is right when he reproaches the parliamentary alliance for ignoring the constitutional provisions, which provide that the election date should be set 45 days before the expiration of the term in office of the incumbent President,” Gheorghe Cojocaru said in an interview for Radio Free Europe.

According to him, the formation of a parliamentary alliance ensured the voting in of the Government at the right moment and a feeble start of stabilization on the political arena. However, the election of the head of state will not be a simple move even if the current power finds the necessary 61 votes and a suitable candidate. “The election of the head of state today is no longer a matter that is resolved exclusively inside Parliament. It is the stake of a great political struggle the preparations for which for now take place behind the scenes,” said the historian and publicist.

Gheorghe Cojocaru noted that the protests play their role, especially when the power misacts, but should be yet be within the legal limits so as not to throw society into chaos and arbitrariness. The repeat of an assault on the Parliament Building to stop the election of the President will reveal once again the weak face of the government, which risks losing credibility irreversibly. The solution is to avoid such a development by making use of peaceful means.
