There were much tenser situations in the Moldovan-Russian relations than the one created as a result of the expulsion of five Russian diplomats, the president of honor of the Democratic Party Dumitru Diacov stated in the program “Emphasis on today” on TVR Moldova channel, IPN reports.

“There were even more difficult situations. For example, when the Kozak Memorandum was to be signed, all the agreements had been already reached and Vadimir Putin was to fly to Chisinau, but the then President Vladimir Voronin announced that he would not sign this,” stated the Democratic heavyweight.

Diacov pleaded for the improvement of the Moldovan-Russian relations. “Life does not end with the expulsion of diplomats. We are obliged to find methods to improve the Moldovan-Russian relations. We want to have good relations with Moscow,” he stated.

As to the criticism leveled at the government by President Igor Dodon after five Russian diplomats were declared personas non grata, Diacov said this often takes rushed decisions without examining the details. “Since he was elected President, Igor Dodon has made hasty statements based on emotions, on party positions. Such declarations have a justification in the electoral period. The presidential office is a state institution, of the Republic of Moldova. So, Dodon must defend the position of the state, not of the party,” stated the president of honor of the PDM.

Analyst Nicolae Negru in the same program said that the expulsion of diplomats for Russia is not a novelty. ”In Estonia, two Russian diplomats were declared personas non grata and let’s remember the scandal when the U.S expelled over 30 Russian diplomats. This is how the Russians probably understand the diplomatic relations. Before Chisinau declared the five personas non grata, these were repeatedly summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and were issued with diplomatic notes,” stated the analyst.
