The driver who in July caused a road accident on Decebal Blvd in Chisinau, which resulted in one death and a number of persons injured, was sentenced to six year and ten months behind bars. The driver ran away from the place of the accident and was caught in ten days, IPN reports.
Traveling late in the evening with three passengers in the car, the driver violated the traffic rules and, changing lanes, collided with another vehicle, being projected further into two more cars. A woman aged 29, who was driving one of the struck cars, died in the hospital, leaving two children. Three passengers were hurt.
When he was arrested later, the 31-year-old man accepted blame. He reportedly didn’t have a driver’s license as he had been stripped of this earlier. As he left the place of the accident, the police were unable to establish if he was under the influence of alcohol when he committed the accident.
Besides the jail term, the Buiucani Court also obliged the culprit to pay 5 million lei in respect of non-pecuniary damages and over 296,000 lei in respect of pecuniary damages to the successor of the injured party and also damages totaling over 1.5 million lei to the other victims.
The sentence is not final and can be challenged in the Chisinau Appeals Court.
