Dozens of volunteers gathered in Chisinau’s central garden “Stefan cel Mare” on June 14 to donate blood at a mobile transfusion center set up there. Every donor received candies and juices. The event was held on the occasion of the World Blood Donor Day, Info-Prim Neo reports. Prime Minister Vlad Filat was among the donors. He said that this event is very important and is a signal that all the people should notice. “Blood is life and I’m glad that I could help today those who need aid. The people should help those who are in difficulty,” said the Premier. He stated that the procedure went smooth, but he will not be able to respect the doctor’s recommendation to stay at home for two days as he must chair the meeting of the Cabinet and then make a field trip. Minister of Health Andrei Usatyi said it wasn’t the first time that he donated blood. “Every person who will donate blood today will save at least three lives,” said the minister. According to him, there are two donors per 100 people in Moldova at present. In order to satisfy the necessities of blood, the number of donors should double. Minister of Defense Vitalie Marinuta came to donate blood together with 50 students of the Military Academy “Alexandru cel Bun”. He said that he donates blood every six months. He also said that the students came to donate blood voluntarily and their example should be followed. “Every drop of blood can save a life,” stated Vitalie Marinuta. Svetlana Cibotari, head of the National Blood Transfusion Center, said the procedure is not complicated and lasts for about 10 minutes. At the first stage, they check if the person donated blood earlier and what were the results. At the second stage, the doctor talks to the donor to see if there are no restrictions for donating blood. Donation tests and the procedure itself follow next. The donors receive a certificate showing that they donated blood as well as candies and juices. After donating blood, they should drink more liquid, walk more and avoid physical activity. Despite the rain, the people queued up at the two tents put up in the park. Those who decided to become involved said there are many people who need blood. Some of them said they asked for permission from work to come and donate blood. About 350 units of blood products are transfused into patents in Moldova every day, 70% of which in such cases as surgeries, traumas and hemorrhage during delivery. In 2% of the daily cases, the blood is transfused into children.
