Dorin Chirtoaca’s decision to resign was unexpected, opinions

The decision by the suspended mayor Dorin Chirtoaca to leave the mayoralty of Chisinau was unexpected, said experts invited to the talk show “Key issue” on NTV Moldova channel, IPN reports.

Jurist Sergei Misin said no one expected Dorin Chirtoaca to resign. The suspended mayor most probably took such a decision in order to struggle for a seat in Moldova’s Parliament. “I think Dorin Chirtoaca was forced by circumstances to leave the post,” he stated.

Political analyst Corneliu Ciurea said a connection should be made between the resignation handed over by the mayor of Chisinau municipality and the resignation tendered by the mayor of Balti. The Liberals renounced the ties with the Democrats and supported Renato Usatyi in his intention to create an absolutely unpredictable political situation in 2018.

Corneliu Ciurea noted the Party “Our Party” and the Liberal Party could have even reached an agreement. “It seems that these two political forces, in order to obtain electoral chances, create particular unpredictability in order to try and save themselves,” said the analyst.

Journalist Alexandru Stahurschii said Dorin Chirtoaca’s resignation is not accidental and is part of a plan. The goal is for the posts of mayor of Chisinau and mayor of Balti in the next local elections to be won by persons loyal to the ruling part. “The parliamentary elections are very important and loyal people who would contribute to the victory of the leading party in the legislative elections are needed,” stated the journalist.

On February 16, mayor general of Chisinau municipality Dorin Chirtoaca, who was suspended from post, announced that he decided to vacate his seat in protest at the abuses committed against the capital city and against him.
