In the election campaign of this year, when the country is fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, the Central Election Commission should have banned he large-scale meetings with voters, considers Dorin Chirtoacă, the candidate for President of the UNION Electoral Bloc.
In an interview for IPN, the candidate argued that the National Extraordinary Public Health Commission’s decisions do not specify exceptions for the period of the election campaign. “The virus does not behave differently if you are a candidate or not, if it’s a campaign or not. The virus attacks anyway. On the contrary, emphasis should be placed on debates, online sphere, TV, radio, print media and social networking sites. All the families have TV and radio and the family that have members abroad communicate online. It was actually a matter of common sense for the candidates to come first of all to debates, even if the meetings are allowed. We, for example, limited a lot the meetings and hold them only if the protection measures and distance are observed and only in the open air and with a limited number of participants,” stated Dorin Chirtoacă.
According to him, when a candidate does not come to a debate for the reason that he has a meeting with voters, this lies. These candidates intentionally organize a meeting with several persons somewhere so as not to take part in the confrontation. They don’t come to debates because they are probably afraid that the people will see who is better and will draw correct conclusions. For the people not to draw those conclusions, they endlessly put off the normal appearance before the people through the press, but they should appear before the people so as not to mislead them with different myths.
On October 21, IPN planned to hold the first electoral debate that was to involve candidates for President Dorin Chirtoacă, of the UNION Electoral Bloc, and Octavian Țîcu, of the National Unity Party. The latter didn’t show up even if he earlier confirmed his participation. He argued he does not have enough time to reach the venue.
