“I will be glad if a referendum is held. This way it will become clear again how things stand,” Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca said, commenting on the initiative of the Chisinau councilors of the European People’s Party (PPEM) to initiate a referendum on his dismissal, IPN reports.
In the April 18 ordinary meeting of officials of Chisinau services and divisions, the mayor said that if a referendum was held, things would develop in two ways. “They dismiss me and get rid of the chief evil in Chisinau and in Moldova or they resign themselves because they groundlessly disturb the people and put them in the situation to vote again in referendums one year after the elections,” he stated.
Dorin Chirtoaca also said that he sees no reasons to hold a referendum, if only the frustrations and the foolishness of some because these betrayed. “It should be clear that we, in the Council, were betrayed by a pro-European party – the PPEM – which took the side of the Socialists and together with these has a majority of votes. They should assume this role,” stated the mayor. He proposed compiling a common agenda of all the groups on the Municipal Council so that the local councilors work for the benefit of the people.
The group of the PPEM last week suggested holding a referendum on the dismissal of the mayor general because of the chaos in the city and non-transparent tender contests and because this opposes the reformation of the City Hall’s apparatus. The councilors of the Party of Socialists, who earlier proposed initiating a similar referendum, and those of the “Our Party” said they will support the initiatives of their colleagues of the PPEM.
